Example

Title: Percentile Range

Grade: 9-a Lesson: S2-L6

Explanation: The best way to understand statistics is by looking at some examples. Take turns and read each example for easy understanding.

Examples:

The weights of 8 people were recorded in kg as 35, 41, 42, 56, 58, 62, 90, 77. Find the percentile for the weight 58 kg.

Step 1a

Arranging in ascending order

Explanation: Let us arrange the observations in ascending order

i.e, smallest value to largest value

\$35, 41, 42, 56, 58, 62, 77, 90\$

Step 1b

Identify the n and N values.

Explanation:

Total number of values 'N' = 8,

Number of values below '58' = 4

Step 1c

Calculate Percentile

Explanation:

Percentile = \$"Number of values below x" / "Total number of values " \$ × 100

Percentile = \$4/8\$ × 100

⇒ \$0.5 × 100\$

Percentile = 50

The percentile for weight 58kg = 50
