Lesson

Title: Percentile

Grade: 9-a Lesson: S2-L5

Explanation: Hello students, let us learn a new topic in statistics today with definitions, concepts, examples, and worksheets included.

Lesson:

Definition: Measures of Position:

  • These measures are used to describe the position of a value with respect to the rest of the values of the data set.

  • To compute quartiles and percentiles, but not to compute z-scores, the data must be sorted by value.

1

Explanation: The three most commonly used measures of position are

  • Quartiles

  • Percentiles and

  • Standardized scores (z-scores).

Definition: Percentile :

  • Percentiles are used to understand and interpret data. They indicate the values below which a certain percentage of the data in a data set is found.

Percentile Rank :

  • The percentile rank of a score is the percentage of scores in its frequency distribution that are equal to or lower than it.

  • For example, a test score that is greater than 75% of the scores of people taking the test is said to be at the 75th percentile, where 75 is the percentile rank

2

Explanation:

steps for calculating Percentile Rank:

  1. Arrange the data in ascending order.

  2. Count the number of values in the data set and represent it as 'n'.

  3. Substitute the given percentile value as 'x'.

  4. Find the percentile rank by substituting the values in the formula.

  5. Count the value from left to right in the given data set until you reach particular rank.
