Example

Title: Percentile

Grade: 9-a Lesson: S2-L5

Explanation: The best way to understand statistics is by looking at some examples. Take turns and read each example for easy understanding.

Examples:

In a college, a list of grades of 15 students has been declared. Their grades are given as: 85, 34, 42, 51, 84, 86, 78, 85, 87, 69, 74, 65. Find the 80th percentile?

Step 1a

Arrange the data in ascending order

Explanation:

34, 42, 51, 65, 69, 74, 78, 84, 85, 85, 86, 87

Step 1b

Count the number of values in the data set 'n' and Percentile as 'x'

Explanation:

n = 12

x = 80

Step 1c

Calculate the percentile rank by substituting the values.

Explanation:

Percentile Rank ⇒ \$ P_x = (x(n+1)) /100\$

\$ P_80 = (80(12+1)) /100\$

\$= (80(13)) /100\$

\$= 1040/100\$

\$ P_80 = 10.4 ∼ 10\$

Count the value from left to right in the given data set until you reach the number 10.

From the given data,10th number is 85

80th percentile of the given data is 85
