Example

Title: Measures of variation-Interquartile range

Grade: 9-a Lesson: S1-L8

Explanation: The best way to understand statistics is by looking at some examples. Take turns and read each example for easy understanding.

Examples:

Find out the interquartile range for the given observations 2,22,4,20,6,18,8,16,10,14,12

Step 1a

Arrange the data in ascending order

Explanation: Let us arrange the given observations in ascending order

i.e, 2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18,20,22

Step 1b

Find out the median

Explanation: median = 12

2,4,6,8,10,\$12\$ → first half

\$12\$,14,16,18,20,22 → second half

Step 1c

Calculate the IQR.

Explanation: \$Q_1\$=\$(6+8)/2\$=\$14/2\$=7

\$Q_3\$=\$(16+18)/2\$=\$34/2\$=17

IQR = \$Q_3 -Q_1\$ = 17-7 = 10
