Title: Median for grouped data

Grade: 9-a Lesson: S1-L5

Explanation: Hello students, let us learn a new topic in statistics today with definitions, concepts, examples, and worksheets included.

Lesson:

Definition: Measures of central tendency

  • Measures of central tendency determine the central point of a data set or the point around which all the measurements are scattered.

1

Explanation: The three main measures of central tendency are the mean and the median, mode

Definition: Median

  • Median is said to be value of central tendency along with mean and mode for a given set.

  • It gives the middlemost value of the frequency distribution.

Where ,

l is the lower limit of median class,

n is the number of observations,

f is the frequency of median class,

h is the class size,

cf is the cumulative frequency of class preceding the median class.

2

Explanation: Steps for calculating median for grouped data:

  • Prepare the cumulative frequency column and obtain \$n = \sum f\$ and find \$n/2\$

  • Look for the cumulative frequency near to \$n/2\$ and determine the corresponding class. This is the median class.

  • Use the median formula to calculate.
