Definition: Division

  • The division symbol is indicated by a small horizontal line with a dot each above and below the line(÷).

  • Two basic division symbols represent the division of two numbers. They are ÷ and /.

Definition: Dividend

A number to be divided by another number is called the dividend.

Explanation: From the image, four books contain 100 pages, each containing 25 pages. On dividing 100 by four, we get 25. Hence 100 is the dividend.

Definition: Divisor

A number that divides another number either completely or with a remainder is called a divisor.

Definition: Quotient

The quotient is the number we obtain when we divide one number by another.

Definition: Remainder

The remainder is the leftover number that cannot divide exactly.
