Example

Title: Subtraction

Grade: 2-a Lesson: S1-L8

Explanation: The best way to understand subtraction is by looking at some examples. Take turns and read each example for easy understanding.

Examples:

Step 1a

Subtract 290 from 25

  • Start subtracting the digits at ones place.

  • We can see that 0 is greater than 5. So, we will borrow 1 from the tens column which will make it 10.Now, 10 - 5 = 5 ones.

1a

.

Explanation: Arrange the numbers according to their place values.
we can see that 0 is smaller than 5. We can’t subtract 0 from 5.So, we borrow 1 from the tens column and get 10 ones in the ones column. Now, we can easily subtract 10 -5 = 5.

Step 1b

  • After giving 1 to the ones column in the previous step, becomes 8.

  • Now, let us subtract the digits at the tens place 8 - 2 = 6.

1b

.

Explanation: In the next step, we move to subtract the digits at the ten’s place.
Please note that the digit at the ten’s place is now 8 , instead of the 9.
Now,subtract 2 from 8 and hence we get 6 as the answer at the ten’s place

Step 1c

  • Now, subtract the digits on the hundreds place, i.e., 2 - 0 = 2 hundreds.

Therefore the difference between the two numbers is:
290 - 25 = 265.

1c

.

Explanation: Now, subtract the digits on the hundreds place, i.e., 2 - 0 = 2 hundreds.

Hence,290 - 25 = 265.
