Example

Title: Subtraction

Grade: 2-a Lesson: S1-L3

Explanation: The best way to understand subtraction is by looking at some examples. Take turns and read each example for easy understanding.

Examples:

Step 1a

Subtract 176 from 29

  • Start subtracting the digits at ones place.

  • We can see that 9 is greater than 6. So, we will borrow 1 from the tens column which will make it 16. Now, 16 - 9 = 7 ones.

1a

.

Explanation: Arrange the numbers according to their place values.
we can see that 6 is smaller than 9. We can’t subtract 6 from 9. So, we borrow 1 from the tens column and get 16 ones in the ones column. Now, we can easily 16 - 9 = 7.

Step 1b

  • After giving 1 to the ones column in the previous step, becomes 6.

  • Now, let us subtract the digits at the tens place 6 - 2 = 4

1b

.

Explanation: In the next step, we move to subtract the digits at the ten’s place.
Please note that the digit at the ten’s place is now 6 , instead of the 7. Now,subtract 2 from 6 and hence we get 4 as the answer at the ten’s place.

Step 1c

  • Now, subtract the digits on the hundreds place, i.e., 1 - 0 = 0. hundreds.

Therefore the difference between the two numbers is:
176 - 29 = 147.

1c

.

Explanation: Now, subtract the digits on the hundreds place, i.e., 1 - 0 = 0. hundreds.

Hence,176 - 29 = 147.
