Lesson

Title: Standardized scores or z-scores

Grade: 9-a Lesson: S2-L4

Explanation: Hello students, let us learn a new topic in statistics today with definitions, concepts, examples, and worksheets included.

Lesson:

Definition: Measures of Position

  • These measures are used to describe the position of a value with respect to the rest of the values of the data set.

  • To compute quartiles and percentiles, but not to compute z-scores, the data must be sorted by value.

1

Explanation: The three most commonly used measures of position are

  • Quartiles

  • Percentiles and

  • Standardized scores (z-scores).

Definition: Standardized scores or z-scores:

  • Standardized scores, commonly known as z-scores, are independent of the units in which the data values are measured.

  • They are useful when comparing observations measured on different scales.

  • A z-score gives the distance between the measurement and the mean in terms of the number of standard deviations.

  • A negative z-score indicates that the measurement is smaller than the mean.

  • A positive z-score indicates that the measurement is larger than the mean.

2

Explanation:

steps for calculating z-scores:

  1. Identify the measurement,mean,standard deviation

  2. subtract the mean from measurement

  3. Then divide the obtained value with the standard deviation

  4. Obtained value is Standardized scores or z-scores
