Definition: Fraction

  • A fraction represents a numerical value, which defines the parts of a whole.

  • It represents the equal parts of the whole. A fraction has two parts, namely numerator and denominator.

  • The number on the top is called the numerator, and the number on the bottom is called the denominator.

Whole numbers are a set of numbers including all natural numbers and zero.

Definition: Like Fraction

Fractions that have the same denominators are known as like fractions.

The two fractions stem from \$p/q\$ and \$r/s\$, and their denominators q and s are equal (i.e., q = s), so they are like fractions.

When adding like fractions, you can add the numerators while keeping the denominator unchanged.

Definition: Unlike Fraction Addition

Fractions that have unequal denominators are known as unlike fractions.

Unlike fractions, make the denominators the same first and then add them.
