Example

Title: Division

Grade: 3-a Lesson: S4-L8

Explanation: The best way to understand divisions is by looking at some examples. Take turns and read each example for easy understanding.

Examples:

Step 1a

Divide 500 by 9

Draw the division symbol ⟌ and write divisor (9) on its left side and dividend (500) enclosed under this symbol.

1a

.

Explanation: Arrange the numbers in division form:

Step 1b

  • Since the first digit of the dividend is less than the divisor (5 < 9), bring down the next digit of the dividend.

  • New dividend is 50.

  • 50 > 9 but 50 is not divisible by 9, so we look for the number just less than 50 in the table of 9. + * We know that 9 x 5 = 45 which is less than 50.

  • Write quotient 8 and subtract 50 - 45 = 5.

1b

.

Explanation: Here, the first digit of the dividend is 5, but 5 < 9 put down the next digit of the dividend and place it beside 0.
New dividend is 50.
50 is not divisible by 5, We know that 5 x 9 = 45 which is less than 50.
Write quotient 8 and subtract 50 - 45 = 5.

Step 1c

  • In this step, bring down 0.The number to be considered now is 50.

  • Since 50 is divisible by 9, but we know that 9 x 5 = 45, so, we take 5.

  • Write 5 in the quotient and subtract 50 - 45 = 5.

Therefore quotient is 55 and remainder is 5.

1c

.

Explanation: Here, the third digit of the dividend is 9,now new dividend is 50.
50 is not divisible by 9,We know that 9 x 5 = 45.
Write 5 in the quotient.

Hence,quotient is 55 and remainder is 5.
