Example

Title: Division

Grade: 3-a Lesson: S4-L6

Explanation: The best way to understand divisions is by looking at some examples. Take turns and read each example for easy understanding.

Examples:

Step 1a

Divide 390 by 4

Draw the division symbol ⟌ and write divisor (4) on its left side and dividend (390) enclosed under this symbol.

1a

.

Explanation: Arrange the numbers in division form:

Step 1b

  • Since the first digit of the dividend is less than the divisor (3 < 4), bring down the next digit of the dividend.

  • New dividend is 39.

  • 39 > 4 but 39 is not divisible by 4, so we look for the number just less than 39 in the table of 3.

  • We know that 4 x 9 = 36 which is less than 39.

  • Write quotient 9 and subtract 39 - 36 = 3.

1b

.

Explanation: Here, the first digit of the dividend is 3, but 3 < 4 put down the next digit of the dividend and place it beside 9.
New dividend is 39.
39 is not divisible by 4, We know that 4 x 9 = 36 which is less than 39.
Write quotient 9 and subtract 39 - 36 = 3.

Step 1c

  • In this step, bring down 0.The number to be considered now is 30.

  • Since 30 is not divisible by 4, but we know that 4 x 7 = 28, so, we take 7.

  • Write 7 in the quotient and subtract 30 - 28 = 2.

  • Now 2 < 4.

Therefore quotient is 97 and remainder is 2.

1c

.

Explanation: Here, the third digit of the dividend is 0,now new dividend is 30.
30 is not divisible by 4,We know that 4 x 7 = 28.
Write 7 in the quotient.
Now 2 < 4.

Hence,quotient is 97 and remainder is 2.
