Example

Title: Division

Grade: 2-a Lesson: S4-L7

Explanation: The best way to understand divisions is by looking at some examples. Take turns and read each example for easy understanding.

Examples:

Step 1a

Divide 417 by 5

Draw the division symbol ⟌ and write divisor (5) on its left side and dividend (417) enclosed under this symbol.

1a

.

Explanation: Arrange the numbers in division form:

Step 1b

  • Since the first digit of the dividend is less than the divisor (4 < 5), bring down the next digit of the dividend.

  • New dividend is 41.

  • 41 > 5 but 41 is not divisible by 5, so we look for the number just less than 41 in the table of 5. + * We know that 5 x 8 = 40 which is less than 41.

  • Write quotient 8 and subtract 41 - 40 = 1.

1b

.

Explanation: Here, the first digit of the dividend is 4, but 4 < 5 put down the next digit of the dividend and place it beside 1.
New dividend is 41.
41 is not divisible by 5, We know that 5 x 8 = 40 which is less than 41.
Write quotient 8 and subtract 41 - 40 = 1.

Step 1c

  • In this step, bring down 7.The number to be considered now is 17.

  • Since 17 is divisible by 5, but we know that 5 x 3 = 15, so, we take 3.

  • Write 3 in the quotient and subtract 17 - 15 = 2.

Therefore quotient is 83 and remainder is 2.

1c

.

Explanation: Here, the third digit of the dividend is 7,now new dividend is 17.
17 is divisible by 5,We know that 5 x 3 = 15.
Write 3 in the quotient.

Hence,quotient is 83 and remainder is 2.
