Example

Title: Division

Grade: 2-a Lesson: S4-L4

Explanation: The best way to understand divisions is by looking at some examples. Take turns and read each example for easy understanding.

Examples:

Step 1a

Divide 286 by 3

Draw the division symbol ⟌ and write divisor (3) on its left side and dividend (286) enclosed under this symbol.

1a

.

Explanation: Arrange the numbers in division form:

Step 1b

  • Since the first digit of the dividend is less than the divisor (2 < 3), bring down the next digit of the dividend.

  • New dividend is 28.

  • 28 > 3 but 28 is not divisible by 3, so we look for the number just less than 28 in the table of 3. + * We know that 3 x 9 = 27 which is less than 28.

  • Write quotient 9 and subtract 28 - 27 = 1.

1b

.

Explanation: Here, the first digit of the dividend is 2, but 2 < 3 put down the next digit of the dividend and place it beside 8.
New dividend is 28.
28 is not divisible by 3, We know that 3 x 9 = 27 which is less than 28.
Write quotient 9 and subtract 28 - 27 = 1.

Step 1c

  • In this step, bring down 6.The number to be considered now is 16.

  • Since 16 is not divisible by 3, but we know that 3 x 5 = 15, so, we take 5.

  • Write 5 in the quotient and subtract 16 - 15 = 1.

  • Now 1 < 3.

Therefore quotient is 95 and remainder is 1.

1c

.

Explanation: Here, the third digit of the dividend is 6,now new dividend is 16.
16 is not divisible by 3,We know that 3 x 5 = 15.
Write 5 in the quotient.
Now 1 < 3.

Hence,quotient is 95 and remainder is 1.
