Example

Title: Division

Grade: 2-a Lesson: S4-L2

Explanation: The best way to understand divisions is by looking at some examples. Take turns and read each example for easy understanding.

Examples:

Step 1a

Divide 312 by 8

Draw the division symbol ⟌ and write divisor (8) on its left side and dividend (312) enclosed under this symbol.

1a

.

Explanation: Arrange the numbers in division form:

Step 1b

  • Since the first digit of the dividend is less than the divisor (3 < 8), bring down the next digit of the dividend.

  • New dividend is 31.

  • 31 > 8 but 31 is not divisible by 8, so we look for the number just less than 31 in the table of 8. + * We know that 8 x 3 = 24 which is less than 31.

  • Write quotient 3 and subtract 31 - 24 = 7.

1b

.

Explanation: Here, the first digit of the dividend is 3, but 3 < 8 put down the next digit of the dividend and place it beside 1.
New dividend is 31.
31 is not divisible by 8, We know that 8 x 3 = 24 which is less than 31.
Write quotient 4 and subtract 31 - 24 = 7.

Step 1c

  • In this step, bring down 2.The number to be considered now is 72.

  • Since 72 is divisible by 8, but we know that 8 x 9 = 72, so, we take 9.

  • Write 9 in the quotient and subtract 72 - 72 = 0.

Therefore quotient is 39 and remainder is 0.

1c

.

Explanation: Here, the third digit of the dividend is 2,now new dividend is 72.
72 is divisible by 8,We know that 8 x 9 = 72. Write 9 in the quotient.

Hence,quotient is 39 and remainder is 0.
