Example

Title: Division

Grade: 2-a Lesson: S3-L3

Explanation: The best way to understand divisions is by looking at some examples. Take turns and read each example for easy understanding.

Examples:

Step 1a

Divide 230 by 5.

Draw the division symbol ⟌ and write divisor (5) on its left side and dividend (230) enclosed under this symbol.

1a

.

Explanation: Arrange the numbers in division form:

Step 1b

  • Since the first digit of the dividend is less than the divisor (2<5), bring down the next digit of the dividend.

  • New dividend is 23.23 > 5 but 23 is not divisible by 5, so we look for the number just less than 23 in the table of 5. We know that 5 x 4= 20 which is less than 23.

  • Write quotient 4 and subtract 23 - 20 = 3.

1b

.

Explanation: Here, the first digit of the dividend is 2, but 2 < 5 put down the next digit of the dividend and place it beside 2. New dividend is 23.
233 is not divisible by 5, so we look for the number just less than 23. We know that 5 x 4= 20 which is less than 23.
Write quotient 4 and subtract 23 - 20 = 3.

Step 1c

  • Now 3 < 5 bring down the next digit of the dividend and place it beside 0.

  • So, we have 30 as the new dividend. 30 is divisible by 5,We know that 6 x 5 = 30 so, we go for it.

  • Write quotient 6 and subtract 30 - 30 = 0.

Therefore quotient = 46 and remainder = 0.

1c

.

Explanation: Now 3 < 5 bring down the next digit of the dividend and place it beside 3 to make it 30.
Write quotient 6 and subtract 30 - 30 = 0

Therefore quotient = 46 and remainder = 0.
