Definition: The Coordinate Plane

The coordinate plane is a flat surface divided into four regions by a horizontal line called the x-axis and a vertical line called the y-axis. It allows us to locate points using pairs of numbers called coordinates, usually written as (x, y), where x tells us how far to move left or right, and y tells us how far to move up or down.
