Title: Scientific notations

Grade: 6-b Lesson: S2-L8

Explanation: The best way to understand algebra is by looking at some examples. Take turns and read each example for easy understanding.

Examples:

Convert 0.00000067 into scientific notation.

Step 1a

Given number is 0.00000067.

Move the decimal point to the right of 0.00000067 up to 7 places.

The decimal point was moved 7 places to the right to form the number is 6.7.

The decimal is moved to the right since the numbers are less than 10. Hence, we use a negative exponent here 0.00000067 ⇒ \$6.7 × 10^-7\$.

Explanation: So, 0.00000067 in scientific notation is \$6.7×10−7\$.

Convert 937000000 into scientific notation.

Step 2a

Given number is 937000000.

Move to the decimal to the left in 8 places. So it is positioned to the right of the leftmost non-zero digits 9.37000000.

Remove all the zeroes and multiply the number by 10. Now the number has become = 9.37.

Since the number is greater than 10 and the decimal is moved to the left, we use a positive exponent here.

The scientific notation is \$9.37×10^9\$.

Explanation: So, in scientific notation, 937000000 is written as \$9.37×10^9\$.
