Title: The Associative Property

Grade: 6-a Lesson: S2-L1

Explanation: The best way to understand algebra is by looking at some examples. Take turns and read each example for easy understanding.

Examples:

Use the Associative Property of Addition to find the value of the variable
\$ 10 + (z + 1) = (10 + 7) + 1 \$
.

Step 1a

Given Equation:

\$ 10 + (z + 1) = (10 + 7) + 1 \$

Apply the Associative Property of Addition to the terms inside the parentheses.

10 + z + 1 = 10 + 7 + 1

Explanation: Here, we rewrote and applied the associative property of addition.

Step 1b

Combine like terms on both sides of the equation.

z + 11 = 18

To isolate the variable x, subtract 11 from both sides of the equation.

z + 11 - 11 = 18 - 11

⇒ z = 7

Explanation: Here, after simplified the expression then we get z = 7.

Use the Associative property of multiplication for
\$2 × (3 × 4) = ( 2 × 3) × x\$
.

Step 2a

Given Equation:

\$2 × (3 × 4) = ( 2 × 3) × x\$

Apply the Associative Property of Multiplication.

\$2 × 12 = 6 × x\$

\$24 = 6 × x\$

Dividing 6 on both sides then we get a variable value.

\$24/6 = x\$

\$4 = x\$

Explanation: Here, we applied the associative property of multiplication then we got x = 4.
