Example

Title: Multiplying and Dividing signed numbers

Grade: 6-a Lesson: S1-L4

Explanation: The best way to understand algebra is by looking at some examples. Take turns and read each example for easy understanding.

Examples:

Perform multiplication on the following signed numbers:
(+ 3) × (+ 2), (- 3) × (- 2), (+ 3) × (- 2), (- 3) × (+ 2), (+ 3) × 0 and (- 3) × 0

Step 1a

(+ 3) × (+ 2) = + 6
(- 3) × (- 2) = + 6
(+ 3) × (- 2) = - 6
(- 3) × (+ 2) = - 6
(+ 3) × 0 = 0
(- 3) × 0 = 0

Explanation: Here the sign rules for multiplication were applied.

Perform division on the following signed numbers:
(+ 12) ÷ (+ 3), (- 12) ÷ (- 3), (+ 12) ÷ (- 3), (- 12) ÷ (+ 3), 0 ÷ (+ 3) and 0 ÷ (- 3)

Step 2a

(+ 12) ÷ (+ 3) = + 4
(- 12) ÷ (- 3) = + 4
(+ 12) ÷ (- 3) = - 4
(- 12) ÷ (+ 3) = - 4
0 ÷ (+ 3) = 0
0 ÷ (- 3) = 0

Explanation: Here the sign rules for division were applied.
