Example

Title: Addition

Grade: 3-a Lesson: S1-L6

Explanation: The best way to understand addition is by looking at some examples.Take turns and read each example for easy understanding.

Examples:

Step 1a

Add 786 and 136

  • Write the numbers one below the other as per the places of the digits.
    \$786 + 136\$

  • Add units place i.e.,6 + 6 = 12.So, write 2 and carry 1 to the ten’s column.

1a

.

Explanation: Arrange the number according to their place values. Start adding from the digits in ones place(6 + 6 = 12).Write 2 and carry 1 to the ten’s column..

Step 1b

  • Add ten’s place including carrying 1. So, it will be 8+ 3 + 1 = 12.

  • Write 2 and carry 1 to the hundred’s place.

1b

.

Explanation: Add the digits in the tens column along with the carryover 1.
This means, 1 (carry-over) + 8 + 3 = 12. Here the sum is 12.
The tens digit of the sum, that is, 1, will be carried to the hundreds place.

Step 1c

  • Add hundred’s place including carrying 1. So, it will be 7 + 1 + 1 = 9.

  • Now there is no carryover and we can directly write 9 in the hundredth’s column.

Therefore, the sum of 786 + 136 = 922.

1c

.

Explanation: Now, add the digits in the hundred’s place along with the carryover digit 1, that is, 1 (carry-over)+ 7 + 1 = 9.

Hence, 786 + 136 = 922.
