Write the numbers below the other as per the places of the digits.

Start with the digits in ones place (8 + 8 = 16). Here the sum is 16.
The tens digit of the sum, that is, 1, will be carried to the preceding column.

So,write 6 and carry 1 to the ten’s column.

Step 1c

Add the digits in the tens column along with the carryover 1. This means, 1 (carry-over) + 3 + 1 = 5. Here the sum is 5.
Now we add hundredth’s place i.e., (1 + 0 = 1).

Therefore, 138 + 18 =156.
