Example

Title: Addition

Grade: 2-a Lesson: S1-L5

Explanation: The best way to understand addition is by looking at some examples.Take turns and read each example for easy understanding.

Examples:

Step 1a

Add 138 and 18

  • Write the numbers below the other as per the places of the digits.
    \$138 + 18\$

1a

.

Explanation: Arrange the numbers according to their places.

Step 1b

  • Start with the digits in ones place (8 + 8 = 16). Here the sum is 16.

  • The tens digit of the sum, that is, 1, will be carried to the preceding column.

1b

.

Explanation: Start adding from the digits in ones place.(8 + 8 = 16)
So,write 6 and carry 1 to the ten’s column.

Step 1c

  • Add the digits in the tens column along with the carryover 1. This means, 1 (carry-over) + 3 + 1 = 5. Here the sum is 5.

  • Now we add hundredth’s place i.e., (1 + 0 = 1).

Therefore, 138 + 18 =156.

1c

.

Explanation: Add ten’s place including carrying 1. So, it will be 1 + 3 + 1 = 5. Now there is no carryover and we can directly write 5 in the ten’s column.
Now we add hundredth’s place i.e., (1 + 0 = 1).

Hence, 138 + 18 = 156.
