Definition: Subject pronouns

A subject pronoun is used as

  • the subject (s) of a sentence or

  • a clause.

Examples: I admire Jim Thorpe’s athletic achievements.

Tip: Subject pronouns

  • A subject pronoun is also used as a predicate nominative(PN) following a linking verb.

  • It renames the subject.

  • Example: The tall men on the right are Brady and he.

Definition: Object pronouns

An object pronoun is used as a

  • direct object (DO),

  • indirect object (IO), or

  • object of a preposition (OP).

Examples:

  • The news article gave us a description of Thorpe’s life.

  • One town in Pennsylvania built a memorial to him.
