A predicate nominative is a noun (or pronoun) that occurs after a linking verb and means the same as the subject.

Tip: Predicate nominatives

  • To prove the predicate nominative, invert the sentence. This is called inverting the sentence.

  • Begin with the word(s) after the verb, include the predicate nominative, and go to the beginning of the sentence.

  • Example: Mr. Harrison is Charlie’s tennis coach. Charlie’s tennis coach is Mr. Harrison.
