Definition: Transitions

Transitions refer to words or phrases that help connect ideas, sentences, and paragraphs smoothly and logically. They play a crucial role in writing by guiding the reader through the text, indicating relationships between ideas, and ensuring that the flow of the essay or passage is coherent and easy to follow.

Types of Transitions

  • Addition - To add similar ideas or details.
    Examples : also, in addition, furthermore, moreover, besides

  • Contrast - To show differences or opposing ideas.
    Examples : however, on the other hand, in contrast, nevertheless, although

  • Cause and Effect - To show a reason or result.
    Examples : because, therefore, thus, as a result, consequently

  • Comparison - To show similarities.
    Examples : likewise, similarly, just as, in the same way

Types of Transitions

  • Time or Sequence - To indicate order or progression.
    Examples : first, then, next, finally, meanwhile, afterward

  • Emphasis - To highlight an important point.
    Examples : indeed, in fact, especially, above all, certainly

  • Summary or Conclusion - To restate or wrap up ideas.
    Examples : in conclusion, to sum up, in summary, overall
