Explanation Answer

Problem

Mrs Joe’s garden is made up of 4 squares and 2 semicircles as shown below. Each small square has an area of 7 square meters. Find the total area of the garden.

Formula used

\$"Area" = \pi \times r^2\$

Step - 1

The garden is made up of 4 squares and 2 semi circles.

The total area of the 4 squares = \$7 \times 7 = 49 "square meters"\$

Step - 2

Since the area of a small square = 7 square meters, the side of a small square = 3.5 meters.

Also the radius of a semicircle = length of the side of the square which 3.5 meters

Step - 3

The area of the surface inside the two semicircles = the area inside one whole circle

⇒ \$\pi (3.5)^2 = 12.25 \pi\$

⇒ \$12.25 \times 3.14 = 38.465\$ [∵ π = 3.14]

Therefore, the area of two semi circles is 38.465 meters

Step - 4

The total area of the garden = \$49 + 38.465 = 87.465\$

Step - 5

Hence, the total area of the garden is \$87.465 "square meters"\$
